After a few hot calm days with a slight easterly breeze, the wind blew from the south again with no sign of a good blow from the north yet, leaving the fish indecisive.
Perhaps things are different down deep, as several boats have had action with tiger sharks, with Tarka releasing a pair of these monsters, estimated at 230 and 360kgs, last Saturday, while Neptune and Snowgoose also both found tiger sharks and released them. These two latter boats, along with Eclare, have also been catching the odd sailfish, along with mixed bags of yellowfin, wahoo, GT’s, dorado and bonito, while a 28kg cobia was recorded. However it does not look as if the sailfish have come in around Malindi in any quantity yet, despite the beginning of December normally being the peak season.
At Lamu, Simba tagged and released a blue marlin, while Alleycat at Watamu also released a black marlin, so there are still some marlin around, although these are the only two reports this week. Another day, the latter boat released a spinner shark and Sand Dollar tagged two sailfish, but the hot calm days are making the fish lethargic.
At Diani, White Dove went out for a test run, and found a sailfish, while Shuwari with angler Colin Gunson and family tagged two sail and Yasmine Schlatter had another in the same boat. But the varying wind is thought to be upsetting the fish so everyone hoping for that north wind, the kaskazi, to blow up hard.
Hearing that some big yellowfin tuna up to 100kgs had been caught by commercial fishers at Lamu, White Mischief went up to check it out but were unable to find any. Fun was had jigging and trolling, however, with a varied bag including bigeye and longfin tuna, kingfish and snapper as well as wahoo and dorado and a sailfish, which were caught on the way home after spending the night anchored in the lee of Ziwayu island. The commercials had not caught any more big tuna, so these had vanished a day or two earlier – a common story in the angling world!
First prize in the Capt Andy Xmas tourney at Watamu for small boats will be a 15hp Yamaha engine so this should ensure good entries. Overall winner will receive three Shimano reels so really good prizes – -see you there!
