Indian Ocean Powerboat School – The Specialists in Powerboat Training
“The Indian Ocean Powerboat School (IOPS) is a fully accredited Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Overseas Training Centre that began operating in late 2010. This is a first for Kenya and for East Africa, a training centre that offers professional and fun courses for the pleasure boating industry with the emphasis on powerboating.
In setting up IOPS the Principal, Andy Thomas, Captain Andy’s, and the Chief Instructor, Simon Hemphill opted to go the RYA route for virtue of the incredibly high standards and value attached to all RYA qualifications. RYA qualifications are recognised all over the world as being the best and most professional around. In Kenya, these qualifications are fully approved by the Kenya Maritime Authority.
We specialise in powerboat courses using the RYA UK syllabus with the intention of expanding in the very near future to offer courses in the Motorcruising category including the Yachtmaster Offshore. The school offers high-quality professional powerboat training that is taught in a fun and friendly manner by hand-picked instructors.
Who should do a course? Anyone involved in boating whether as a professional or as a hobby should obtain an approved qualification not only to be legal but more importantly to ensure an understanding of best maritime practices. The ocean can potentially be a very dangerous and frightening place but with a little knowledge and training we are able to learn to recognise and cope with the dangers before they happen. All our courses are designed with a high degree of safety but never losing sight of the fun side of boating.
We are situated at the Creek Marina, Nyali on the Captain Andy’s Fishing Supply property on the idyllic Tudor Creek on the northern side of Mombasa Island with direct access to the Indian Ocean.”
