The annual Eye Go Fishing tournament was held last weekend at Mtwapa, and was a great success, raising over half a million shillings for the Kwale Eye Centre.
First was the team on Delta, Justin and Matthew Walters and Sean McGovern, which tagged two sailfish as well as landing a dorado, a kingfish and a wahoo with skipper Ken Rodwell, a great catch as fishing is difficult at the moment. First in the amateur stream was What it Takes, with skipper Nas Khan and his son Jameel, which tagged a sail and weighed a dorado and a wahoo – the sail won the best fish prize for Jameel as the earliest one caught. Nala came second in the professional group fished by Fritz, Romana and Pascal, while Silulu with anglers Jake, Richard, Ryan and Ben were second in the amateur group. Sponsored by Yamaha, Capt Andy’s and Liaison Insurance, hundreds of patients will be able to see again thanks to the great work done by Dr Helen Roberts and her dedicated team at the Eye Centre.
Fishing continues slow in the Watamu/ Malindi area with few sailfish seen. The Wild Fly tournament, found Garry Cullen releasing a sail on fly in Simba on the third day, but no more sail were tagged on the last day. Long time regular anglers David and Val Hall, tagged a sail on White Bear, and Neptune and Castle Lager also found a sail each, while Eclare scored two sail another day.
Tarka, fishing from Watamu has tried the Rips area, and on Monday found a very nice blue marlin for angler William Carr – Hartley, which sadly came in tail-wrapped and drowned – it weighed 141kgs and they also tagged a sailfish, while an earlier trip yielded a striped marlin. Alleycat also tagged a stripey and a sail so the Rips are beginning to look promising. Now we need that north wind to blow properly and liven up the fish!
